Appliance repairs are nearly predictable, but don’t be hopeless, fixing it isn’t that difficult. We will describe and explain how to troubleshoot your washing machines for some common malfunctions.

How a washing machine works?

Washing machines vary from different manufactures, but still have the same principles. It simply works by cleaning your clothing by means of water and detergent mixture. Since a washing machine varies in different models, a top loading washing machine works when the agitator spins back and forth dragging the clothes down to the bottom then move back to the top where the agitator pulls them again. While in a front-loading washing machine, the clothes stumble in the base of the washer tub over and over again. After the water is pumped out, inner barrel uses a centrifugal force and squeezes the excess water by again spinning it depending upon the washer model.

How to Remove Odor from your Front-loading Washing Machines

In order to eliminate the odor coming from your washing machine, follow these simple steps:

1. Make sure to leave the door open after each phase.

2. You may buy products such as Tide Washing Machine cleaner or the like in any grocery stores or you can order some of them online.

3. Prepare a hot water cycle to break down unwanted odors inside your washing machine.

4. Buy a 1 gallon of white vinegar. Pour about a half in the washing machine’s tub and then run any cleaning cycle. Use this process once a month, thorough usage of this process may damage some rubber parts of your washing machine.

5. If odor persists, leave the door open for how many days and remove the detergent drawer to eliminate the unwanted odor.

6. Wipe down your door gasket by using antibacterial wipes or any bleached-based cleaner.

How to Remove Odor from your Top-loading Washing Machines

Use washing machine cleaner products that are available in the market.
Drain excess water properly inside the washing machine and see to it to wipe and dry the white plastic piece found at the lip of the tub.
Try to remove the agitator if you can and clean it using a clean rag.
Rinse thoroughly by using a hot water solution in order to break down those odorous residue.
If odor persists, leave the door open for how many days.

PROBLEM	REMEDY
Washer does not work and makes no noise	Check it if properly plugged. Check the circuit breaker, fuse box, and water supply. Inspect the filter screens, and the motor pump. Test for overheating, timer control, water leaving switch, lid switch, water inlet valve, centrifugal switch and most importantly the motor.
Washer does not work but it does make noise	Check whether the water supply valves are turned on. Inspect the filter screens as well as the water pump. Test for overheating, water inlet valve and motor.
No water is entering the wash tub	Check whether the water supply valves are turned on. Inspect the water supply hoses, it might be twisted. Ensure the filter screens. Test water level switch, water temperature switch, timer control and water inlet valve.
The water fills the wash tub too slowly	Ensure that the water valves are turned on full, the water pressure at the tap, the filter screens and test the water inlet valve.
The tub does not fill with enough water	Ensure that the drain hose is situated approximately as high as the top of the inner tub. Test the water level switch.
The water overflows the wash tub	Examine the timer control, the water level switch, and the water inlet valve. Inspect the air tube for damage.
Water drains out during the wash or rinse cycle	Check the drain control lever, and cam bar. Test the drain control coils and timer control.
Water drains out while it is filling	Check the drain hose; it’s supposed to be at least as high as the top of the wash tub. Check the drain control lever as well as the cam bar. The drain hose must sit loosely in the house drain. Do not close the air gap around the drain hose or a drain off will occur.
Water drips into the wash tub when the washer is off	Replace the water inlet valve.
Water does not drain out of the wash tub	Inspect the drain hose if twisted, the water pump, the drive belt and the motor coupler. Test the timer control and lid switch (for some models)
Agitator does not move	Inspect the motor coupler, drive belt, the pulley, agitator and pump coupling. Test the lid switch as well as the water level switch.
Agitator movement is weak or moves in only one direction	Inspect the agitator, motor coupler, drive belt, pulley and the pump coupling. Test the transmission and the motor.
Drum does not spin	Test the lid switch, timer control, centrifugal switch, water level switch, motor and transmission. Inspect the motor coupler, drive belt and as well as the pulley.
Clothes are too wet after spin cycle	There might be a drain or a spin problem Drain: Check the drain hose for a partial blockage and make sure that the drain line is clear. Inspect the water pump. Spin: Test the lid switch, timer control, centrifugal switch, water level switch, motor and transmission. Inspect the motor coupler, drive belt, and pulley.
Cycle does not advance	If the washing machine fills with water and begins agitating, but the timer does not advance, the timer most likely needs to be replaced. While in a spin cycle, if the timer does not advance the timer probably needs to be replaced. If the timer does not advance during the rinse cycle, check whether water has filled the tub, if not, it is likely cold water related. Check the cold water supply valve, the supply hose if twisted, the filter screen and the water inlet valve
Burning or electrical smell	Unplug the washer
Stale odor coming from washer or clothes	Check that the drain line is clear, if drain hose is twisted or blocked and check for build up of soap in the outer tub.
Noisy or vibrates too much	Balance the load Inspect the water pump for a blockage, coupling and transmission. Check the motor bearings and drum brakes. Adjust the drive belt tension.
Clothing is damaged	Examine agitator for cracks or rough spots.
